I am no stranger to having shelves in the bedrooms of our home, haha! We have shared how to build your own rustic shelves here and a plant shelf DIY here.
Adding shelves in a bedroom can be purely aesthetic, functional, or a little of both! They are a fantastic way to add texture and fill a large wall too. That is what inspired my daughter and husband to build these in her room.
I’m sharing how we’ve used them in our own home and more inspiration at the end from others too!
These corner shelves hold my youngest daughter’s favorite faux plants and it creates a cozy feel in her bedroom.
Our girls love having shelves in their bedrooms to display framed photos, hold candles and books, and pretty collectibles. A great example of how my middle daughter styled her floating shelves above her bed is here.
You can see below that we grouped items by a similar color palette and a mix of textures. You can add varying heights with books and framed artwork.
They can be a great way to fill a large open wall! I often get asked how to fill a large wall in a bedroom, and why not try shelves!
Bedroom shelves can also serve to hold functional items such as desk supplies or provide extra storage for items like toiletries. I am going to be adding a corner desk to our bedroom soon, and plan to install some shelves above my desk to hold pens, sticky notes, and other business papers.
Of course, shelves with only books are pleasing to look at and allow you to have a place to display and store your collection. I know my husband wishes we had this in our bedroom haha!

These floating shelves above the desk are styled so prettily. I like the idea of having a clock and it seems there is a box to hold special items too.
When I saw this over the bed hutch for storage, I was instantly in love haha! I love how the hutch is used for book storage but has a beautifully streamlined look by turning all of the books around.

I love the modern farmhouse look that these shelves offer in this bedroom. As you can see the wood is thick enough to show pieces that are appealing and decorative, as well as, a place for other more functional items to land.
If you don’t already have shelves in your bedroom, I hope you feel inspired to give them a go. There are so many ways to use them and a great way to fill a large wall. Which one of these ideas was your favorite?
