Decorating tables for Christmas can feel a bit overwhelming at times. Our home has a console table, chest top, small wooden tabletop, and a mantel, all within in the same open-concept space. I knew that coming up with vignettes for each of these needed to be something I felt at ease doing, especially during the holidays. And so, I came up with three steps I use each time I approach spaces like these. I hope they will be helpful to you too!
Shop the look below:
Pick an inspirational piece to anchor the space. I chose this gorgeous “sleigh rides” sign from my friend over at Oh Sweet Skye. She has many wooden sign options if you want a modern farmhouse piece like this one. Other examples of inspiration pieces include mirrors, artwork, and architectural pieces. You want it to have height and the “look” you want for the rest of the table to model after. Think about its colors, texture, and size. I began with a wreath over the sign to give even more height and a basket full of pillows underneath.
Then check out this FREE, downloadable, and printable guide containing a tutorial on how to make a gingerbread house using cardboard! This is the exact template my grandfather used when hosting our gingerbread house parties that hold such fond memories for me.
Find two identical pieces and place them on either side of the inspiration piece. I used these frosted trees that I have had for some time now. You don’t want these pieces to be taller than the inspiration piece. Think of the inspiration piece as the top of an invisible triangle set on top of your table. Now draw lines out like you are making a triangle from the wood sign to the trees.
Now it’s time to fill it all in! As you can see, I enjoyed adding several pieces, but you can just add a small vignette to the middle of the table if you prefer. Consider adding various heights and textures when filling in the space between your two symmetrical pieces. Textures can include glass (like this amazing-smelling Christmas candle), wood objects, metal, and greenery. I used several chippy pieces like candle holders to fill in around the center vignette.
The Christmas vignette in the middle has varying heights and textures and also utilizes the rule of decorating in odd numbers (i.e., 3, 5, etc). I simply set two crocks with faux holiday trees on top of a wood riser. Then, I added a small Merry Christmas sign to complete the odd number pairing. It’s that easy friends!
