I am so thrilled to share with you how to create the perfectly organized (and pretty!) fridge and freezer. I LOVED the way this project turned out. You know why? Because our fridge and freezer were a mess and, after a little work, they are now AMAZING! They went from messy and not functioning well for our family to clutter free! Our food is visible and accessible. And, even though it may be kind of funny to say about your fridge, can I just say that it looks really pretty!?
If you’ve followed me on this blog for a while, you know that this transformation was ignited by tackling other “eyesores” and poorly organized spaces in our home because of the difference it has made in our day-to-day life.
At the end of the post, I have linked the other four organization posts that I think you’ll love! Plus, for your convenience, I’ve created a product list as well; everything is linked in all one place for you!
Why bother? No one sees the inside of your refrigerator, right? The problem is that it was difficult to see what we had in our fridge and freezer, which led to me overbuying certain groceries because I couldn’t find or see the things we already had. My children would often complain about not having something when in reality, we DID have it . . . We just couldn’t find it! So, I knew that everything had to be taken out first.
As you can see, I completely emptied the fridge and freezer; nothing remained. It already felt better! As I emptied them, I created piles that were like items and threw away items that had expired. Here are some of the piles I created:
Fruit
Canned Drinks
Water Bottles
Yogurts
Cheese Sticks
Fruit Pouches
Deli Meats and Cheeses
Juice Boxes
Meats
Uncrustables
Breakfast Sandwiches
Now that I had my sorted piles, it was time to have fun! I received so many fantastic containers from “The Container Store,” and I knew that they were going to bring me the look and functionality I had been hoping for! I began placing these pieces in the fridge and freezer with a purpose.
With four children, foods they enjoy need to be on the lower shelves, making them easy to access.
As you can see, the top shelves are well stocked with beverages. I am so thrilled to have this glass drink dispenser that we can enjoy filling with water + fresh fruit (such as the lemons you see here) to keep us hydrated throughout the summer months. It is also so nice to have our orange juice in this clear glass bottle. These soda can organizers with shelves can stack, doubling our amount of beverages being visible, and my children love that they slide out like a “vending machine.” Below that shelf is where we are stocked water bottles using this water bottle holder.
These deep fridge bins (found here ) were perfect for the lower shelves to hold snacks our children love. We used these more narrow rectangle bins for things like applesauce pouches and cheese sticks, while we used these larger, square shaped bins for yogurts and smoothies. In the drawer below is this greensaver produce container that holds fresh produce such as grapes and strawberries to keep them fresh and not spoiling, cutting down on waste!
For our deli meats and cheeses, we found this large deli container, as well as these mini ones, that keep them fresh and easy to access. It’s so pretty, too! Something about making sandwiches with these containers felt much more desirable than opening up plastic bags! Also, our eggs are now in these wonderful plastic bins to protect them and continue the streamlined look throughout our fridge organization.
After emptying everything out of the drawers and off the shelves, I discovered that many items needed to be thrown out because they were freezer burned or we just were not eating. I’m grateful that having a freezer organized will cut down on this by not wasting food because it is not visible. The clear bins we used are perfect for storing our preferred foods and for the kids to easily access these as well.
Breakfast items such as sausage biscuits were placed in this large divided freezer bin. I love this because it offers even more detailed organization. The more narrow divided bins (found here) hold pre-made sandwiches for the children. I found this wide and open container, and this storage basket with a handle to also be quite useful in our narrow freezer. All of these pieces are light weight creating an ease when getting items in and out of the freezer.
In fact, when I woke up the next morning after completing this project it was such a wonderful way to start the day when I opened the newly organized fridge to reach for the coffee creamer. “The Container Store” pieces met our needs as a family of six: maximum functionality, organized, and an overall clean and pretty look. It’s so nice to not have all the bulky boxes foods and drinks come in, but rather empty them into containers that keep them organized and give this streamlined look.
