Do you have a laundry room that as doubles as a catch-all for everything else too? My laundry room was precisely that; it had all kinds of things that didn’t belong (check out the BEFORE in the pictures below). Because I could close the door once I was done getting what I needed, I was only bothered by it being messy when I’d walk into the room. But this space needed help! We are a family of six, and an organized and well-functioning laundry room was well overdue. I finally did something about it, and with some fantastic pieces from The Container Store, the result was a restored space, restored to functioning correctly as a laundry room.

I am so thrilled to share the progression with you! Follow these steps and you too can create the perfectly organized laundry room. This project is another one of my efforts to add better organization to our home (check out our perfectly organized pantry here, perfectly organized closet here, toy organization here , and perfectly organized bathroom closet here).

I LOVED undertaking this laundry room makeover. You know why? Because of the dramatic results it produced!

Our laundry room really was causing extra work and added stress because of its chaotic feeling. This transformation spurs me on to tackle other “eyesores” and poorly organized spaces down the road because of the difference it makes in our day-to-day life and relief it provides.

Now, I am going to take you step-by-step on how to do this in your own home. Let’s get started! Plus, at the end of the post, I provide you with a product source list for you to easily recreate your own laundry room makeover.

With there being so many items that we no longer used, and several items that needed to be thrown out or placed elsewhere in our home, I knew the first step was to take everything out.

As you can see, I completely emptied the laundry room; nothing remained. It already felt better! As I emptied the laundry room, I created three piles: keep, giveaway, and trash. The keep pile included items that would be going back into this space plus other items that needed to go to a different space in our home (i.e., children’s socks, beach and pool bags, beach towels, Christmas storage box).

Now that I had my sorted piles, it was time to bag up all the items that were to be taken to charity in black trash bags and move them out of the house. We had a total of two large black trash bags full to donate from our laundry room! We also threw away several broken/mismatched bins, empty cleaning supplies and detergent bottles, and other items that were not needed and not worth giving away.

This project, like other organizing projects is great to get your children involved too! My daughters did everything from sorting socks that were keep vs. throw away, to assembling The Container Store pieces we would be placing back into the laundry room. Having them help gives them the opportunity to own a task and build confidence, like our oldest daughter felt when she assembled the rolling cart (I’ll share it below) by herself!

For the items we kept, it was time to have some fun by figuring out how to properly arrange them. I found amazing baskets, laundry products, a cleaning supplies cart, and other pieces from “The Container Store,” and I knew that they were going to bring me the look and functionality I had been hoping for! One of my favorite parts was just restoring this space to its intended purpose and creating a pleasant environment for doing laundry. I began placing all these pieces in the closet with a purpose.

As you can see, the top shelf of our laundry room has a lot of vertical space above it, so I knew I wanted to put them to use by placing baskets that could hold everyday laundry items. I fell in love with these Water Hyacinth Braided Weave Bins found here , for holding items like fabric sheets, extra detergent, and fabric softener. They also provided the solution to holding our Wifi modem, I just sat it inside of the bin! These Smart Store Adhesive labels pack of 12 found here provided a great look and will make it easy to change out labels if needs change over time.

My old system of various baskets to sort darks, colors, and lights was taking up too much room and just created a messy look. When I found this Heavy-Duty 3-Bin Rolling Laundry Sorter with Wheels found here , I knew it would solve these problems immediately. It also encourages you to not let the laundry pile up too high. I can easily roll it from our bathroom and back to the laundry room to gather the dirty clothes for washing.

Next up, I choose this wonderful Dark Grey 3-Tier Rolling Cart found here to manage our cleaning supplies, light sewing needs, and the detergent we use daily. It has three shelves that allow you plenty of space to keep all of these things. Even better? I placed this InterDesign Linus Large Divided Tote found here on the top shelf to further organize and allow me to easily pick up these laundry items and move when needed. In the bottom two shelves, I added these Clear Plastic Storage Bins with Handles found here and these Smoke Plastic Storage Bins with Handles found here to further sort cleaning supplies and other like items.

During the summer months especially, we go through a lot of towels. This Compact Accordion Clothes Drying Rack found here is perfect to unfold when the need arises in our laundry room. Not only do we use it for towels but for other items that do not need to go in the dryer. It is nice to not have things randomly hanging around our laundry room wire shelves now! Plus with it being foldable, I just set against the wall when not in use. It’s truly the perfect solution for any laundry room but especially a small one like ours. And, I love these White Stackable Laundry Basket with Grey Handles found here .

Want to cut your laundry folding in 1/2?! The Grey FlipFOLD Laundry Folder found here from The Container Store makes folding all those shirts that are folded in your family a simple task now. Plus, your children will love using it, like my daughter is in the photo below. I remember working retail in high school and using a folding tool like this; it was something that I had loved and so glad to have one for our home now!

Though our ironing board and iron typically stay in our bathroom, the laundry room is the best place to house these things. Our laundry room is smaller, but again, think about wall space for flat items like an ironing board (and the foldable drying rack I shared above) to hang them when not in use. My husband is pretty particular about his irons (he is the one in our family to iron), and he loves this Rowenta Access Steam Iron found here ! He’s already replaced it with the one he was using and highly recommends it.

Last but not least, I love smells in a laundry room haha! Anyone else? I am loving this The Laundress 33.3 oz. Signature Detergent found here and The Laundress 8 oz. Stiffen Up Starch found here for our laundry. It smells so fresh and so clean, clean. Alongside our detergent are other cleaning supplies, extra paper towels, a lint brush, and a sewing kit. The Apothecary Jar found here holds all of our safety pins but would also be perfect to hold clothes pins as well.

Your laundry room can be easily organized in a 1/2 days work; even shorter if you have help! By emptying out your space first, finding pieces that will function for your family’s laundry needs, and then adding back in all the essentials, you can create the perfectly organized and stress-free laundry space of your dreams!
