I am so thrilled to share with you how to create the perfectly organized (and aesthetically pleasing!) closet. This project is another one of my favorite home projects to date (check out our perfectly organized pantry here). You know why? Because of the dramatic results it produced. Our closet went from very messy and extremely cluttered to one that is truly an organized and pleasant to walk into. This transformation continues to spark my desire to tackle other “eyesores” and poorly organized spaces down the road because of the difference it makes in our day-to-day life.

Now, I am going to take you step-by-step on how to do this in your own home. Let’s get started!

BEFORE

BEFORE

BEFORE

Showing you the “before” photo of our closet allows you to see just what I mean when I say it was a disaster haha! Although there was some attempt at hanging baskets and tubs, none matched, nor were they organized with any intention. It was difficult to see what we had in our closet and hid clothing that my husband and I truly had forgotten we had.

Also, there was several clothing items that we no longer wanted/needed, along with items such as framed wall art, jewelry, and kids memorabilia that didn’t belong in our closet (it truly had become a catch all, boo!) So, I knew that everything had to be taken out first.

Better already!

Better already!

As you can see, I completely emptied the closet; nothing remained. It already felt better haha! As I emptied the closet, I created three piles: keep, giveaway, and trash. The keep pile included clothing, shoes, and the other items that we wanted to keep but did not belong in our master closet anymore.

Now that I had my sorted piles, it was time to bag up all the clothing items that were to be taken to charity in black trash bags and move them out of the house. We had a total of 12 large black trash bags full to donate! We also threw away several broken hangers and other items that were not needed and not worth giving away.

For the items we kept, it was time to now have fun putting it into our closet. I received so many amazing boxes, hangers, shoe shelves, and other pieces from “The Container Store” and I knew that they were going to bring me the look and functionality I had been hoping for! I began placing these pieces in the closet with a purpose.

As you can see, these wooden hangers instantly created a streamline look to our hanging clothes. Because we do not have room for 2 dressers in our bedroom, I created my dresser with these awesome Elfa Mesh Start-A-Stack units found here. The drawers are so easy to pull in and out.

My shoes were in desperate need of finding a home that was sturdy and easy to access. These 2-tier bamboo shelves did the job perfectly! On the shelves above my hanging clothes sit beautiful storage boxes including these Oak Woodgrain Storage Boxes, the Farmhouse Storage Boxes found here, and the large Bigso Grey Woodgrain Storage Box found here. Each of these unique boxes are the perfect solution to hold things like winter gloves and hats as well as shoe shining products. I love how streamlined they look!

My husband was excited to have a hanging solution that was wide enough to hold both his shorts and sweaters. These Grey 3-Compartment Hanging Sweater Organizers are sturdy and look great. Probably his favorite part of this makeover was the addition of his shoe storage solution. These Men’s Drop Front Shoe Boxes are not only cool but they function so easily! He also keeps his caps in two of them as well.

Originally I had planned to hang my scarves on this Chrome Metal Scarf Organizer but I ended up placing those inside one of the storage boxes instead. This opened up the possibility of my husband using it to hang his ties on. It works great for that purpose too!

The “after” left us asking why we had not done this earlier?! In fact, instead of keeping the closet door closed, we didn’t mind it staying open anymore. “The Container Store” pieces met our closet needs: maximum functionality and super organized with an overall clean and pretty look. We added this rug to tie it all together and something soft to walk on. It’s so nice to not have all the messy clutter and unneeded pieces in our closet, but rather a streamlined look for an incredibly transformed closet!
