For those of you who have goals of growing your following and impact in the social media world, I am so excited to share with you all these words of advice that I consolidated from my time at the Haven. Some of these you’re doing already. Some may be new thoughts for you.

The goal is to get to a place where you’re doing these consistently, building a foundation of daily practices that drive engagement on your social media and/or blog.

  1. Give Two A Go.  It’s easy to get quickly overwhelmed when we begin thinking about all the social media platforms and search engines out there, and nearly impossible to keep up with each of them to the fullest engagement and sharing possible. Good news: you don’t have to do it all! Instead, pick two and work hard developing those two.
  2. Stay Active On Pinterest. First, it’s important to know that Pinterest is not just a social platform, it is a search engine. Second, staying active on Pinterest every day is highly recommended, especially if you are a blogger. Pinterest has the potential to open big doors for people landing on your blog when you are pinning from your blog and also you pinning others pins. There are group boards that make this more successful too; connect with others you already know on Pinterest to see if they are on a board you can be added to. An additional bonus is that you can add hashtags to your pins.
  3. Engagement Is Important.  I encourage each of you to try your best to follow-up on comments people make on your Facebook or Instagram posts; they took the time to comment, and it’s a great practice to respond to them. Comment on other peoples posts too. Be specific and share a detail of what you enjoyed in their photo or caption. Bonus? If you are looking to work with sponsors or brands in the future, engagement can play a role in them choosing your account.
  4. Look At The Whole Picture. So many of us can become overly worried or focused on our numbers: how many followers do we have on Instagram? How many commented on my Facebook post? While growth is important, it’s like they say, don’t step on a scale every day while trying to lose weight or you’ll get discouraged. Look at the big picture: are your clothes looser? Do you have more energy?  Same thing with your platforms: are you finding you have dedicated and engaged followers? Are you receiving positive feedback? Let go of the numbers as your end all be all.
  5. Shine Your Light. Continue to be who you are in these communities!  Each of us is created uniquely and have certain gifts and abilities, don’t hold those back, let them shine.  You are uniquely and wonderfully made.
